Graduate Assistantship Application

The Carter Center Graduate Assistantship Program offers a limited number of funded opportunities for currently enrolled master's degree and doctoral students. Graduate assistants must make a 9-12 month, 20-hours-per-week commitment and will receive compensation of $14/hour. Please note that these opportunities are based in Atlanta. Graduate Assistantships begin in August and end the following spring or summer. To be considered, you must fill out the application below between Feb. 1 and April 1. Applicants will be notified of decisions no later than May 1.

At the start of the assistantship, qualified applicants must meet all three requirements below:

  • Be enrolled in a master’s, doctoral, or professional degree program throughout the duration of the assistantship.
  • Have completed a minimum of two semesters of their academic coursework by the start of the assistantship. Candidates who have completed their degree are not eligible for the assistantship.
  • Hold a valid U.S. visa, if you are not a U.S. citizen. If you are not a U.S. resident and need visa sponsorship, Emory University cannot support your application at this time.


Before you begin this application, please read the following instructions carefully.

In order to access the Carter Center Graduate Assistantship application, you will need to establish a user account. You will be prompted to create a user name and password and provide a valid email address.

Your user account will give you the option to save and continue your application at a later date, as well as check the status of your applicant file after your application has been submitted. Please be aware that once you submit your application, you will not be able to make any changes.

To complete the online application, please be prepared to provide the following:

  • A 100-word autobiography.
  • A short 250-word essay stating your objectives and expectations of a Carter Center Graduate Assistantship and how they relate to your goals
  • A resume, to be uploaded as a PDF.
  • A short, pertinent writing sample, preferably an academic paper five pages or less, to be uploaded as a PDF.
  • The names, titles, email addresses, and phone numbers of two people prepared to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Your recommenders will be sent a system-generated email, after you have submitted your application that will allow them to copy and paste their recommendation letter into a web form and submit it electronically.

The following materials must be submitted by mail:

  • Official transcripts in sealed envelopes.
